About 6:30 p.m., a recycling truck dumped a load at the Republic Services building in the 4200 block of 14th Street, fire Captain Peggy Harrell said. Investigators are still working to determine the official cause of the fire, but something in the load may have been burning, she said. No one was in the building at the time and no injuries have been reported. The conveyor belt that brings trash to be sorted was also not running at the time.As of 9 p.m., firefighters were attacking the flames from the outside because it was still too unsafe to enter the building. Crews will stay at the scene overnight, Harrell said. The large metal building is expected to be a total loss. Harrell said residents must make sure any item that held a heat source, such as embers from a fireplace or cigarette butts, are completely cool before they get thrown away."Just be very careful about what you put in your recycle bin or in your trash bin," she said.   Continue reading...
