Claud Stanley "Stan" Rupert discovered science as a child and dreamed of studying the vastness of the universe as an astronomer or space traveler.He earned a doctorate in physics, then fell in love with biology. He melded the disciplines into a groundbreaking career as a photobiologist, studying the microscopic world of how sunlight both breaks and repairs DNA.Rupert was a founding faculty member of what is now the University of Texas at Dallas, where he mentored a future Nobel Prize winner. Their research helped explain how sunlight causes skin cancer in some people.The 97-year-old UTD professor emeritus died Feb. 2 of a lung problem at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.Services will be at 1 p.m. March 4 at First United Lutheran Church in Dallas.
