WASHINGTON -- House Democrats called on Monday for the chairman of the House intelligence committee to recuse himself from investigations into Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election.House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., set off a firestorm last week when he unilaterally announced that he had obtained new information suggesting that the communications of President Donald Trump and his associates may have been swept up in surveillance of foreign nationals.That controversy took a step further Monday when it was revealed Nunes had traveled to the White House to meet with a “source” the day before he made his announcement.The senior Democrat on the committee, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, became the first member of the panel to call for Nunes’ recusal from the Russia probe in a written statement Monday afternoon, a recommendation Schiff said he did not make lightly."After much consideration, and in light of the Chairman's admission that he met with his source of information at the White House, I believe that the Chairman should recuse himself from any further involvement in the Russia investigation, as well as any involvement in oversight of matters pertaining to any incidental collection of the Trump transition, as he was also a key member of the transition team," Schiff said.
