Debate Gets Heated Over Proposal to Prevent Abortion Coverage in Primary Insurance Plans

AUSTIN — Abortion rights advocates clashed with anti-abortion lawmakers as a Senate panel debated prohibiting insurance companies from covering elective abortions in primary health insurance plans."Texas must take steps to prohibit taxpayer dollars from subsidizing elective abortions that are not medically necessary," said the bill's author, Sen. Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe, during a meeting of the Senate Business and Commerce Committee on Saturday."Elective abortion coverage is not prohibited, it is simply required to be purchased separately, similar to other supplemental plans offered, like a dental plan," Creighton added.  Continue reading...
