DART Officer Slain During 2016 Ambush on Police in Downtown Dallas Receives Medal of Valor

President Donald Trump gave a Medal of Valor on Wednesday to the relatives of the DART officer killed in the July 7, 2016, ambush on police in downtown Dallas.Trump met privately with the family of Officer Brent Thompson before a ceremony in the White House's East Room.The medal is the country's highest honor for public-safety officers."Every officer, firefighter and first responder who receives this award embodies the highest ideals of service and sacrifice, character and courage," Trump said during the ceremony.Thompson, 43, was on duty during the protest and took a position behind a pillar outside El Centro College after shots rang out. The gunman sneaked up on Thompson and fatally shot him from behind."Brent was killed instantly in the firefight, but his act of courage saved many lives.
