Dallas Trustees to Consider Renaming Schools Honoring Confederates

The Dallas school trustees will discuss renaming campuses named after Confederates during a briefing on Sept. 14.Board President Dan Micciche posted on social media late Tuesday night that DISD has seen an outpouring of calls for the district to rename such schools after the tragic events in Charlottesville."Over the weekend, we witnessed in Charlottesville a terrible tragedy caused by white supremacists. There is no place for the violence and hatred we saw on display this weekend," Micciche wrote in a Facebook post. He later added, "I believe the Board will strongly support the renaming of schools that honor Confederate generals under either the current process or an expedited process."This will be the second year in a row trustees have addressed this issue.Last year, the board approved changing John B. Hood Middle School -- named after a Confederate general -- to Piedmont Global Academy after a vast majority of the campus' students wanted a new name.  Continue reading...
