Dallas' Susan G. Komen Foundation Losing Arizona Presence

The Arizona branch of the Dallas-based Susan G. Komen foundation will be closing at the end of July. The Arizona Board of Directors said the decision was based on financial challenges, downward fundraising trends and dwindling event participation, the affiliate announced in a statement on its website last week. Operations will cease July 31 at the end of the affiliate's agreement with its parent organization."It is with a heavy heart but an uplifting feeling of accomplishment thanks to your commitment that the directors of the Susan G. Komen Arizona Affiliate bids you farewell and extends a sincere Thank you," the statement said.Because of the decision, the 2017 Phoenix Race for the Cure, which was scheduled for October, was cancelled. Last year's race drew 7,500 participants and raised $750,000 for breast cancer research. The numbers were down from 10,000 racers and $1 million raised in 2015. The affiliate's remaining resources and donations will go toward local programs that provide support for screening and breast cancer treatment in the state, Komen Arizona Board President Jill Bray said in a prepared statement. Organizations already selected for Komen grants in March will be funded through March 31, 2018.   Continue reading...
