Dallas Sees a Welcome Change for Low-level Pot Possession

It's been 10 years since the Texas Legislature gave cities the authority to tell their police to lighten up on arrests for marijuana possession. It's the kind of flexibility from Austin that isn't much in vogue these days. We're glad to see the Dallas City Council finally take advantage of the law and, through a 10-5 vote Wednesday, adjust its approach to marijuana possession. Beginning Oct. 1, Dallas police will issue a citation to, rather than arrest, anyone they catch with 4 ounces of pot or less. That's likely going to save police officers time, and they need all the time they can get to focus on their many higher priorities.   Continue reading...
