Dallas Man With DWI Convictions Fled From Fatal North Oak Cliff Crash, Police Say

Dallas police have arrested a man they say drove into a woman in a north Oak Cliff neighborhood and left her to die Monday.Fernando Rico, 22, was charged with one count of accident involving death and two counts of accident involving serious bodily injury.Police say Rico was driving a pickup truck when he made a left turn onto Vernon Avenue, near Tyler Street and Davis Street, around 4:45 p.m.Shamara Vigil Mena, 44, was parked against the curb getting items out of the backseat of he car, which also contained two passengers. Rico hit Mena, crushing her between the two vehicles, and continued driving for several feet before abandoning the truck and running away, witnesses told police.Mena suffered several internal injuries, and was pronounced dead at a hospital later that evening.Two passengers in the car were also injured.Several bystanders tried to chase Rico down, but were asked to stop by 911 operators, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit. They provided descriptions of the man and surveillance footage, all of which matched Rico.Police also found a work ID with Rico's photo and name in the truck left at the scene, according to the affidavit.Rico remained in the Dallas County jail Tuesday afternoon with bail set at $35,000. He has previously pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated with an open container and failing to identify a fugitive.   Continue reading...
