Crash on I-35W Kills SUV Driver, Ties Up Traffic Through Denton for Hours

An SUV driver died Thursday morning after crashing into a bridge pillar in Denton, shutting down Interstate 35W for hours.The crash happened about 9:30 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway at FM2449/Vintage Boulevard.Moments before the fatal crash, the SUV swerved into another vehicle and hit a retaining wall at West Oak Street, but kept driving, witnesses told police.After traveling about four miles south, the driver veered off the highway into the support pillar of an overpass. The victim, who has yet to be identified, died at the scene. Police covered the front end of the SUV in a blue tarp as they directed traffic around the crash scene.The southbound side of the interstate was shut down for hours while police investigated the crash.
