Charge Dismissed Against Mother of Sherin Mathews, the Richardson Girl Found Dead in Culvert

The Dallas County district attorney's office dismissed a child abandonment charge Friday against the mother of Sherin Mathews, the child found dead in a Richardson culvert more than two years ago.Sini Mathews is no longer charged with a crime in the death of her 3-year-old daughter. But Sherin's father, Wesley Matthews, is charged with capital murder in connection with her October 2017 death.The district attorney's office said in a news release that prosecutors could not make a case against Sini Mathews.Her attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.Wesley Mathews remains jailed in lieu of a $1 million bond.Wesley Mathews, Sherin's father, initially told authorities in October that his daughter disappeared after he put her outside as punishment for not drinking her milk. Mathews had waited hours before calling police, authorities said.Wesley Mathews later told Richardson police that Sherin had died from choking after he "physically assisted her" with drinking milk in the family's garage at 3 a.m. Oct. 7. 2017. About two weeks later, on Oct. 22, Richardson police confirmed that the body of a young child found in a culvert was that of Sherin.Police initially arrested Weskey Mathews on Oct. 23, 2017 on a charge of injury to a child. He is being held at the Dallas County jail on $1 million bail. Sini Mathews,was arrested Nov. 16, 2017 on a charge of abandoning or endangering a child. That is the charge prosecutors dropped Friday.Wesley and Sini Mathews adopted Sherin from India in 2016.Wesley Mathews' trial is scheduled for May.  Continue reading...
