A careful reader of the recent story on Caravaggio's masterpiece Martha and Mary Magdalene, on loan to the Dallas Museum of Art, took issue with the assertion that the two women in the painting were sisters.Cue the biblical scholars. We now know that Martha was thought to be Mary's sister until doubts about the identities of various historical "Marys" surfaced in 19th and 20th century scholarship, when the relationship was cast into doubt.
