Boy Scouts of America, There's a Kinder Way to Address Transgender Questions

The Boy Scouts of America finds itself, once again, at the center of a national debate over its membership rules. Leaders of the Irving-based organization have determined that an 8-year-old transgender boy in a New Jersey Cub Scout pack must be expelled because as an infant he was designated as a girl on his birth certificate. It is but the latest chapter in a long fight involving the Boy Scouts that has taken many forms over many decades, through the courts of public opinion and to the Supreme Court and back.The Boy Scouts of America has fought over whether to grant membership to atheists and girls, and — most recently and perhaps most bruisingly — whether boys or adult leaders who are gay may participate.  Continue reading...
