Authorities Kill Escaped Texas Inmate in South Texas Shootout

A Texas inmate who escaped from jail Christmas Eve after injuring several guards was killed in a shootout Tuesday night with law enforcement officers.Jake Childers, 36, was found by officers around 9:15 p.m. in Campbellton, about 50 miles south of San Antonio, according to The Associated Press.Gunfire was exchanged between Childers and authorities, and Childers died at the scene.Authorities say Childers was injured last week after he got into an altercation with jail guards, one of whom he took hostage. He was taken to a hospital for treatment on Friday and Saturday. Sheriff Larry Busby told KRIS-TV that while he was being moved from the hospital back to jail, he escaped out of an unlocked window in the vehicle transporting him. He burglarized a home in George West, equipping himself with guns and a truck. Authorities then set up a search perimeter in Atacosta County. According to WFAA-TV, three helicopters, 65 officers and multiple K9 units searched for Childers before authorities found and killed him.Childers first ran into trouble with the law in November, when he was caught illegally fishing on private property. When a Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden tried to detain him, Childers assaulted him and fled.His sister later helped him hide from authorities for two days before he was arrested in a Wal-mart parking lot in Austin.  Continue reading...
