Abbott Gets Mixed Results in Gamble to Target Three Texas House Incumbents in GOP Primaries

AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott's unusual gamble of meddling in House Republican primaries appeared to meet with mixed results Tuesday.Abbott, who broke with tradition to aggressively go after three allies of retiring Speaker Joe Straus, had at least one winner.The Republican governor backed rancher-businessman Mayes Middleton of Wallisville against two-term Galveston GOP Rep. Wayne Faircloth.Faircloth, an insurance agent who was not a major cog in Straus' leadership organization, lost his bid for re-election.But Abbott's bigger targets, House General Investigating and Ethics Committee Chairwoman Sarah Davis of West University Place and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Lyle Larson of San Antonio, were locked in close contests in early returns.  Continue reading...
