A Pair of Writers With Texas Ties Score Big in the Whiting Foundation Awards, Winning $50,000 Each

Two Texans are among the winners of the 2019 Whiting Awards, which bestows $50,000 each to 10 different "diverse, emerging writers" of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama, the Whiting Foundation announced Wednesday night. One of the winning Texans is Merritt Tierce, author of Love Me Back, whose "clear-eyed, dark-hearted, and mordantly funny" debut novel "approaches," according to the judges, "economically marginalized lives with an unflinching and off-kilter gaze."
