30 Graves Dug Up at Site of New Texas School May Belong to Slaves, Prisoners

Construction on a school in suburban Houston has been halted after excavation efforts at the site revealed an unmarked cemetery that may hold the remains of former slaves and prisoners.A Fort Bend ISD spokeswoman told KPRC-TV reported that crews uncovered human remains while working in a trench at the future location of the James Reese Career and Technical Center in Sugar Land.By Tuesday, nearly 30 graves had been discovered and construction at the site ground to a halt, KTXS-TV reported. Superintendent Dr. Chris Dupree said the district is working with the Texas Historical Commission to ensure that it's following procedures required by the State Antiquities Code."We are proceeding under the guidance and expertise of the Texas Historical Commission to ensure we are respecting the history and lives of the people buried on this site," Dr. Dupree said in a written release.   Continue reading...
