24-year-old Honduran Woman Gives Birth to Stillborn Baby at ICE Detention Center in Texas

A 24-year-old Honduran woman gave birth to a premature, stillborn baby while she was in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Texas last week, officials said.The woman, whose name was not released in a joint statement by ICE and Customs and Border Protection, gave birth to an unresponsive baby boy Friday evening at the Port Isabel Detention Center.She had been taken into custody Feb. 18 near Hidalgo in South Texas. She was about six months pregnant at the time, officials said.ICE and CBP said that the stillbirth is not considered an in-custody death, but officials were "proactively disclosing the details of this tragic event" in an effort to be transparent. The stillbirth follows the news of two young migrant children dying in U.S. custody in December. A 7-year-old girl from Guatemala, Jakelin Caal, died Dec. 8, days after she and her father turned themselves in to Border Patrol agents in New Mexico.
