12 Dead, Including Baby, in Bronx Apartment Building Fire, New York Mayor Says

At least 12 people, including a baby, were dead Thursday night as a fire quickly swept through a Bronx apartment building. Four people were also critically injured and others were seriously injured, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said.Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro called the fire, "historic in its magnitude," because of the number of lives lost.The fire was reported just before 7 p.m. at a five-story building in the 2300 block of Prospect Avenue, a block from the Bronx Zoo.About 170 firefighters fought the fire and rescued fleeing tenants, working in temperatures in the teens.Nigro said the fire started on the first floor and spread upstairs.
