Designer Profile: Nicolas Villalba

NBCDFW Designer Fashion Week

With a style he describes as "a blend of modern edgy-ness mixed with traditional glamour," Nicolas Villalba creates custom pieces designed to make a splash.

A native Texan, Villalba told us about how his heritage got him interested in fashion, plus what inspires his custom looks.

How did you get started in fashion design?
"When I was young, I learned the art of sewing from my grandmothers. Over time, I developed my skills on the sewing machine, and began sewing for friends in junior high and high school.  I knew from a young age that I was destined for a career in the arts, and decided to get my degree in Fashion Design.   My first collection was shown in Europe, after college, and I opened my first studio here in Dallas in 2002."

What inspires you as a designer?
"Since my business is based on custom pieces, I am inspired by my clients. My goal is to bring their vision to life, and help them feel glamorous and beautiful.  I am also inspired travel and music."

How does living in DFW help your designs?
"DFW is an area teeming with fashionistas! The social season is especially exciting, and provides me with many opportunities to create some fabulous gowns.  Most of my clients need to make a grand entrance at a wedding or event, and that is one of my specialties."

What are your favorite pieces to design? Styles?
"My favorite category to design is evening wear – both for women and for men.  The more creative, unusual, and unexpected the better. I love using unusual fabrications and lots of color!  My design style is a blend of modern edgy-ness mixed with traditional glamour."

What seven words would you use to describe your style?
"Colorful, Glamorous, Exciting, Dramatic, Unexpected, Thoughtful, and Special"

If you could design for a celebrity, who would you pick?
"I would be delighted to design a gown for Kate Bush. She is a huge inspiration for me."

What's your 5 year plan? 10 year?
"In five years I will have successfully established my 3 new fashion-based businesses. In 10 years my focus will be on travel and philanthropy."
