A major crash involving seven vehicles Thursday afternoon shut down Interstate 30 west of downtown Dallas both directions.
The Texas Department of Transportation reported that the westbound lanes of I-30 opened just after 5:30 p.m., and the eastbound lanes opened later.
The seven-vehicle crash occurred when an 18-wheeler rammed into the back of a cement mixer traveling westbound on I-30. The cement mixer flipped over the guardrail and into oncoming traffic. It then collided with a rock hauler, at least four passenger vehicles and an 18-wheeler.
The collision, which took place on a bridge over the Trinity River, spanned both sides of the interstate near the Sylvan Avenue exit.
Seven ambulances were called to the scene and transported seven people to Methodist Hospital in Dallas. Two of those people were transported in serious but stable condition.
At 2:15 p.m., traffic on Interstate 35E southbound was backed up to Market Hall. Eastbound I-30 was backed up past Hampton Road. I-30 westbound is also significantly backed up. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes in and out of the city. DPD is diverting traffic from I-30 to Riverfront and Beckley. The Dallas County Sheriff's Department has been asked to stop traffic from entering I-30 from Loop 12.
The Dallas County Sheriff's Department, Dallas Police Department, Dallas Fire Department hazmat and storm water crews and TxDOT worked to clean up the crash.
