8/24: All About The Music

From Billy Idol to Rock Band battles, music reigns

PLATINUM PUNK ROCKER: With the styles of the ‘80s creeping onto the racks of local department stores, it’s only natural for Billy Idol to pop up and relive his golden years. The blonde-haired Englishman burst onto the music scene in the ‘80s and quickly rose to music video stardom thanks to a little channel called MTV – this was way before reality TV and they actually played music videos, kids. Idol was one of the first MTV idols (get it?) and tonight you can see him bare a striking resemblence to his younger self over twenty years ago, blonde hair and all at The Palladium Ballroom 8:30 p.m.

BROADWAY ON DISPLAY: The lights, the stage, and all that jazz! The best of Broadway is out for all to see as Dallas Summer Musicals present the 70th Anniversary Best of Broadway Showcase Exhibit. The show history and memorabilia from stage classics like Rent, Mamma Mia, and Cabaret, are all in one exhibit for musical lovers to admire at the Ross Akard Gallery. The Tony Award-winning company’s anniversary exhibit runs through August 31. And, always remember when you leave to "exit, stage left."

STAR POWER: Live the rock dream, or at least compete for a chance to be the ultimate Rock Band champion in real life. Spend your Tuesday night from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. watching some of North Texas’ most devoted video game rockers battle it out in the Extreme Rock Band Competition at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine. Think of it as karaoke on acid with every piece of equipment full-sized and over-the-top.
