8/19: Artistic Production

HERE’S TO YOU, MICHAEL: Paying homage to the King of Pop with performances that will make you sing "Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough" all the way through Friday – for more reasons than one. The Ruby Revue Burlesque Show presents "Off The Wall: A Burlesque Tribute to Michael Jackson." Hmmm. This Thursday night, the Cambridge Room at House of Blues Dallas, along with Miss Coco Lectric (we’re pretty sure that’s a stage name), brings a cast of dancers who will be sashaying and swaying all over the place. If after a night of glamor and dancing you decide to take up the age ol’ art of burlesque, The Ruby Room does offer lessons. The boas and tassels start twirling at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20.

A RETURN TO THE STAGE: Natalie Merchant has apparently been suffering the seven year itch after being off the musical touring radar for nearly that long. She seems to pop up every now and again, whether it's with 10,000 Maniacs (her former band) or flying solo. She visits Dallas tonight on her "Leave Your Sleep" album tour – her first album since "The House Carpenter’s Daughter" in 2003. "Leave Your Sleep" features a collection of songs that have been lyrically enhanced thanks to the poetry of well-known writers, such as E.E. Cummings and Robert Graves. Merchant describes this album as, “the most elaborate project I have ever completed or even imagined.” Enjoy an evening of Natalie Merchant and her eight-piece band perform her new poetry in motion material and even some old favorites at the Winspear Opera House 8 p.m.

DO-IT-YOURSELF: Even Picasso started somewhere. Now, you can be the artist as you let your creative juices flow at the Dallas Museum of Art. Every Thursday night in the Center for Creative Connections, professional artists and DMA staff members assist art enthusiasts alike in crafting their own masterpieces in the Art Studio. The projects and materials may change but the place and time remain the same – Dallas Museum of Art every Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
