Crews battled a large blaze at apartments in North Dallas on Thursday night.
The fire ripped through the Meadows Crossing apartments at Meadow Road and Manderville Lane.
Investigators said the blaze began in a first-floor bedroom and spread outside and up the wall to a second apartment.
Two families were displaced by the fire.
Cold winter months usually mean more fires in Texas.
Last year, the state reported more than 1,500 fires in November and December.
According to the state fire marshal's office, cooking caused the most structure fires last year, but chimney fires are a real concern as temperatures fall.
The Mansfield Fire Department recommends burning only seasoned dry wood.
