12/1: Holiday Cheer

Watch Will Ferrell perform Elf magic outdoors

HELLO, DECEMBER: Sip on some hot cocoa or spiked egg nog and head on over to Mockingbird Station as they welcome the holiday-filled month of Christmas trees and mistletoe with an outdoor kick-off bash. Hear the New Texas Symphony Orchestra serenade visitors with holiday sounds outside Urban Outfitters from 6 to 8 p.m., while the Woodrow Wilson Variations Show Choir begins the caroling tradition on the steps of the Angelika at 7 p.m. For the grand finale, cozy up on the Angelika’s outdoor mezzanine to watch Will Ferrell spread holiday cheer in "Elf" at 8 p.m.  Bonus – if you slept in on Black Friday, now’s the time to take advantage of Mockingbird Station’s holiday shopping specials tonight with one-night-only deals.

HAPPY HOLIDAYAS EBENEZER: Mr. Scrooge is more than just a grumpy old man who hates Christmas, his supernatural powers allow him to see dead people (a point often overlooked during the holidays). This year Chamblee Ferguson plays the star of the classic holiday tale, "A Christmas Carol" on the Kalita Humphreys Theater stage. Voted best Christmas show by the Dallas Observer, the holiday favorite can be enjoyed by all ages. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are from $15 to $40 and support the North Texas Food Bank. See the play before Ebenezer and his band of merry ghouls exit the holiday season on Dec. 24.

SOME BREATHING ROOM, PLEASE: Bear and Bo Rinehart along with Seth Bolt and Joe Stillwell are the South Carolina natives belting Christian-influenced alternative rock vocals while guitar-stringing on stage under the name Needtobreathe.  The band’s third album “The Outsiders” was released in 2009 and reached number two on Christian album charts. The creative depth behind the musical lyrics comes from the Bear and Bo’s pastor father and his gift for inspiring through sermon speaking. Hear how the band  execute their alternative originality as they perform the “Young and Far From Home” tour with The Daylights at the House of Blues Dallas at 7 p.m. Tickets run from $15.25 to $25.
