1/1-1/2: New Year's Weekend

Run into 2011, live the jazz life and watch the "Kings of Pastry" duke it out

RUN INTO THE NEW YEAR: It’s 2011. Despite the fact that you got chocolatey wasted last night welcoming the New Year, it’s time to lace up the sneaks and begin resolution number one – workout more! Forget about the hangover and head to Flagpole Hill at 10 a.m. on Saturday for the annual New Year’s Five-Mile Run. Yes, this may be a lot to ask from someone who spent the whole night with a beer can in hand, but it is only one way to kick-off a New Year. Registration is $25 and you can pre-register at Run On! on Mockingbird Lane.

BRINGING JAZZ COOL INTO THE NEW YEAR: If you want to welcome 2011 with a day of lounging and nothingness, then do it! At night, continue the laid back pace at Harwood 609 Restaurant and Jazz Club. Enjoy live entertainment by Natural Change while feasting on a Jazz Steak (yes, that’s on the menu). Doors open at 6:30 p.m., so arrive early to get comfy and take a sneak peak at the menu here, because the smooth sounds start at 7 p.m.

PASTRY BATTLE: If the sight of chocolate makes you drool with hunger, take two hours to see how the best pastry chefs in the world make chocolate art in the documentary “Kings of Pastry.” The 2009 film directed by Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker chronicles the tension and the delicious creations put on display at the most prominent pastry competition, Meilleur Ouvrier de France (the Craftsman in France). See how all the (chocolate) drama plays out at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth beginning at noon. Tickets are $8.50, $6.50 for museum members.

For all you football fanatics, catch the Nothwestern vs. Texas Tech game in the inaugural Ticket City Bowl at the Cotton Bowl Stadium at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
