10/28: Riot Act

Ra Ra Riot, Vistas Film Festival and Zoo Boo

POP ROCK RIOT: They started like most college kids do, playing at dive bars, house parties, and any venue willing to give them a shot around the Syracuse University campus in New York. One gig after another Ra Ra Riot gained a following and recognition for their energetic performances and cool indie rock/pop beats. Since their college house party days in 2006, they’ve gone on to tour the U.K. twice, open for the Editors, appear in a series of music festivals and join a music label. Two studio albums later, Ra Ra Riot headlines U.S. tours. After playing Austin and Houston, they visit Dallas tonight with their pop music influenced “The Orchard” tour at The Granada starting at 8 p.m.  – and if you’re curious how they created their latest music see the band’s album documentary “The Making of the Orchard” on Hulu.com.

RED CARPET FESTIVAL: Mockingbird Station is rolling out the red carpet and poppin’ bottles of Moet for the 11th Annual Vistas Film Festival at the Angelika Film Center happening Oct. 28 through Oct. 31. Presented by the Herculano and Elida Hernandez Foundation, the festival promotes Latinos in the arts showcasing films from around the globe during the three day event ending with a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Halloween block party (with the possibility of celebrity sightings).Vistas celebrates cultural creativity featuring full length films, documentaries and shorts created by filmmakers spanning all of Latin America and the Caribbean. The kick-off begins at 6 p.m. with the opening film “Revolucion” starting at 7:30 p.m.  followed by a reception at the Deux Lounge at 9:30 p.m. – for a complete schedule of festival events click here.

KIDDIE SPOOKS: Kids get a kick out of Halloween for the chance to dress up like a Disney princess or action hero for the night, but it’s more for the candy collecting than anything. Tonight the whole family can throw on their costumes and visit the Dallas Zoo celebrating a family-friendly Halloween (no  Fright Night horror ghouls allowed). See storybook characters in the Lacerte Family Children’s Zoo complete with a monster mash, a heckling witch and a witch-ercize workout – not to mention the chance to spin on the Haunted Carousel before heading home. Halloween nights at the Dallas Zoo last from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and if you can’t make it tonight the kid-friendly trick-or-treat bash runs through Halloween.
