10/21: Weird Science

BRAVE NEW ESOPHAGUS: What's more appetizing than tissue engineering as regenerative medicine? Many, many things, but the Southwest chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists is so pumped about inquiries into tissue-based repair of the skin, heart muscle and esophagus that the group is hosting a dinner lecture at House of Blues called Rebuilding People: The Coming Era of Tissue Engineering. Space is limited, so register here. $45 for members; $55 for curious members of the general public. 5:45PM.

TEXTURE AND WHIMSY: We love Philippe Bertho's wacky hand-pulled serigraphs with their French names and their displaced characters. The artist's work lies somewhere between pop art, illusion and Alice in Wonderland. Have fun picking Bertho's daydreams apart at Martin Lawrence Gallery, located in the Galleria -- what you lose in surrounding aesthetic, you gain in the mall's extended hours. The space is open until 9PM.

MOWIN' GRASS: It's a good thing Darrin Kobetich can name what he does with picked-out guitar, effects and a metal attitude. "Ambient Delta Raga Thrash Grass" is the genre the Fort Worth musician came up with, and though the tag's a tad overwrought, we challenge you to find a more interesting interpretation of bluegrass. Hear Kobetich at Backbeat Cafe and Listening Room in Dallas for free.
