Documents obtained by the NBC 5 Investigates team show the staggering cost of keeping the Army psychiatrist charged in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting rampage behind bars.
Maj. Nidal Hasan, who is charged with killing 13 people and injuring dozens of others, is being held in the Bell County Jail.
Documents show taxpayers have spent more than half a million dollars on Hasan's imprisonment since 2010.
Most of that cost -- about $472,000 -- is for security. It includes overtime pay for staff members assigned to Hasan's area of the jail.
Nearly $76,000 is for housing, and feeding Hasan costs about $12 per day.
The U.S. Department of Defense pays for all that while still paying Hasan's salary.
NBC 5 Investigates first reported that Hasan has been paid more than $270,000 while awaiting trial.
