The Fort Worth Zoo has announced the name of its newest female Asian elephant calf, Belle won the public's vote.
The zoo posted on its Facebook page:
"The results are in ... and the baby elephant’s name is ... Belle! Short for Bluebell, a wildflower found throughout Texas, the name symbolizes humility and gratitude. After a two-week-long voting contest, Belle received 29.3 percent of the votes. Thank you to everyone who voted! Happy #BabyElephantDay!"
Staffers picked six names for the calf -- Belle, Maggie, Rose, Ruby and Sage -- and the public got to vote on Facebook.
Mayor Betsy Price declared Thursday "Baby Elephant Day" in Fort Worth and asked citizens to wear pink in honor of the second elephant to be born in the zoo's 104-year history.
Belle was born at 3:34 a.m. on July 7. She weighed 330 pounds and was 38-inches tall, according to the zoo.
Both Belle and her mother, 40-year-old Rasha, have been bonding and getting acclimated to their surroundings, but the zoo says the calf is visible at various times of the day based on how she moves around.
