‘Bridget Jones's Baby' is Consistently Funny: Gary Cogill Review

Renee Zellweger was nominated for an Academy Award for the 2001 original, this time around she's older, now works as a television news producer, is still funny and still celebrating birthdays alone.

It's been 12 years since we saw Renee Zellweger in the disappointing sequel, so it's nice to see her back again making us laugh in, "Bridget Jones's Baby," a consistently funny movie.

In a span of one week she has a fling with a billionaire Internet match-maker played by Patrick Dempsey and a reunion fling with Mr. Darcy, played by the like-able Colin Firth.

Wouldn't you know it, the 43-year-old Bridget ends up pregnant and spends most of the film trying to figure out who's the daddy.

Zellweger is quite good in this silly adult Valentine, directed by the original filmmaker, Sharon Maguire, and co-written by actress Emma Thompson, who plays Bridget's OBGYN.

Their movie doesn't pretend to be anything other than lighthearted, R-rated fun, and I mention the rating because the Brits love to swear and talk about sex, a lot.

"Bridget Jones's Baby" is closer to the popular original and much better than the sequel. Zellweger and her director are determined to let everyone in on the joke, and it helps that she will do anything to get a laugh, and she does.

As a comedy this movie is an accomplishment and Bridget Jones makes it look effortless.
