Denton Black Film Festival VIP All Access Passes On Sale Now

January 23 – 27, 2019

Preparations are underway for the Denton Black Film Festival’s 5th year celebration.

Anchored by cinema, the annual event showcases stories of the African-American community with five days of film, music, art, comedy and spoken word, Jan. 23 – 27, 2019, at venues in Denton.

Celebrating its 60th Anniversary next year, the 1959 classic "Imitation of Life" will be the opening film for the festival. Actress Juanita Moore will be highlighted for her nomination for the Best Supporting Actress by the Academy Awards for her role in the film – which dealt with issues of race and class and featured greats such as Lana Turner, Sandra Dee and Susan Kohner.

In all, more than 60 films will be screened at the festival. The complete film lineup will be announced in December.

On Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019 at 7 p.m. at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at 3220 Town Center Trail in Denton, the festival will close with a musical performance from jazz artist Kirk Whalum with the University of North Texas One O’Clock Lab Band, live in concert. The performance begins at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 at the Murchison Performing Arts Center, located at 2100 N Interstate 35 E. on the UNT campus. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Noted quilt artist Barbara McCraw will be showcased in a one-woman exhibit featuring her work. Opening Reception: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Patterson Appleton Arts Center, located at 400 E Hickory Street in Denton. The exhibit runs Dec. 8, 2018, through Feb. 3, 2019. Installations from fiber artist Taylor Barnes will be highlighted in her "My Genesis" exhibition. A reception will take place on Wednesday Jan. 23, 2019. The exhibit runs from Jan. 8, 2019, to Feb. 4, 2019 at UNT on the Square, located at 109 N. Elm Street in Denton. The exhibit is free and open to the public. No ticket is required.
