Chicago Cubs Players Appear on ‘Saturday Night Live'

There was plenty of speculation about the Cubs' appearance on 'Saturday Night Live,' but it's fairly safe to say that no one expected it to be quite like that.

Fans eagerly anticipating the comedic debut of the newly-crowned World Series champions didn't have long to wait. The show's cold open featured Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton, comparing her week to that of her Republican counterpart on CNN's Erin Burnett OutFront.

"It has been a great week for me too. My fave part was when I lost that big huge lead I had," McKinnon said.

"But I am not worried Erin, it might be the bottom of the ninth, and it’s tied and it’s raining, but this ol’ Chicago Cub is still gonna bring it home," she added to raucous cheers from the audience.

Then in the show's second sketch, outfielder Dexter Fowler, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, and now-retired catcher David Ross made their grand entrance, taking nearly everyone by surprise. [[400156251, C]]

In the sketch, host Benedict Cumberbatch and cast member Mikey Day played strippers at a woman's surprise bachelorette party. The catch? She's 83 years old, and was so shocked by the festivities that she fell unconscious (and presumably died).

After a bit of gyrating and a liberal use of whipped cream, Cumberbatch and Day leaned over Aidy Bryant's "Granny" in mock fear, as if they had finally noticed she wasn't quite there.

"Oh no," Cumberbatch said. "Your Grammy is like our 1000th customer."

"... which means she gets a free dance from the World Series champion Chicago Cubs!" Day added.

Fowler, Ross and Rizzo paraded out in short shorts and Cubs vests, complete with baseball hats on their heads.

"Oh my God, those are the real Chicago Cubs!” Cecily Strong screamed.

"What’s up girls?" Fowler asked, ripping open his vest. "Who wants to hit a granny slam?"

"Don’t worry Grandma, Grandpa Rossy’ll take good care of you," added Ross.

"It’s your lucky night," Rizzo said. "We’re about to pull a triple header."

"You heard the Cubs, let's play ball!" Day shouted, as all three players danced over Bryant.

But the Cubs weren't done yet. During 'Weekend Update,' Colin Jost told the audience that it was a "very special night" as the winners of "Weekend Update's first-ever 'The Voice' contest" were on the show.

From there, viewers see a barbershop quartet with their backs turned. Each player turned around to introduce himself (and yes, Rizzo pointed his finger guns.)

The mystery fourth member? None other than 'SNL' alum and Cubs superfan Bill Murray.

"Guys, can you please put into words what it feels like to be named the first winners of Weekend Update’s ‘The Voice’ contest?" Jost asked.

"It’s unbelievable," Rizzo said.

"I can’t describe it," Ross added.

"This is the best thing we’ve ever done," said Fowler.

"And now I have to ask - you on the end, you look familiar. Did you used to work here?" Jost asked Murray.

"I did," Murray replied. "But that was so many lifetimes ago. Right now, for me, it’s all about our music."

Then, Murray tuned his harmonica, and the Cubs (plus their backup singers) broke into a rendition of "Go Cubs Go" like you’ve never seen before. For good measure, they even added “the Cubs are World Champs today” at the end. [[400156321, C]]

Though he wasn't a part of the cameo, third baseman Kris Bryant was most certainly watching, as he tweeted that the players "have me dying on SNL!!" [[400156231, C]]

Lucky for Cubs fans, the media tour is far from over. Rizzo, Fowler and World Series MVP Ben Zobrist are also slated to appear on "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon on Monday night.

Ross and Bryant will also stop by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Tuesday to talk about their historic win.

This is hardly the Cubs' first brush with prime time television. In July, Rizzo, Bryant and pitcher Jake Arrieta made a brief cameo on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" as the comedian and diehard Cubs fan attempted to bring them good luck. Apparently his antics worked.
