Judge Marsha Revel and Lindsay Lohan have crossed paths in a courtroom for the last time.
On Wednesday, court spokesman Allan Parachini and district attorney's office spokeswoman Jane Robison said Revel recused herself from the case. Robison told the Associated Press there were several instances when the judge had communications and the prosecutor was not present or told after the communications.
"The prosecutor raised objections about the judge having hearings and conference calls without having the DAs present or being notified," Robison told PEOPLE. "It happened several times."
The contacts by the judge include communications between her and defense lawyers as well as other experts in the case. Among those was the Morningside Recovery drug and alcohol treatment center in Orange County, the sources said.
The actress was released Aug. 2 from the women's jail in Lynwood, where she served 14 days of a 90-day sentence for violating her probation in a 2007 drug case. She immediately went to the UCLA drug rehabilitation facility for a court-ordered three-month stint.
The Times, citing sources familiar with the case, reported that prosecutors brought up the issue of the judge's communications at a meeting Friday. Lohan's attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, also attended the meeting with Revel, who recused herself from the case before prosecutors could file the request, according to the Times.
Lohan's case is now in the hands of Judge Elden Fox, who oversaw the Winona Ryder shoplifting trial, actor Lane Garrison's vehicular manslaughter trial, and rocker Courtney Love's drug case.
Revel's clerk told The Associated Press there would be no comment.
