According to a new study by researchers at the Australian National University on the indicating factors that influence lasting marriages, Jon and Kate Gosselin had the odds stacked against them from the very beginning.
The couple of television's most famous reality family "Jon & Kate Plus Eight" were married in an outdoor garden ceremony in their early twenties. Kate was 24 years old, while Jon was just 22.
The research states that husbands who get married before they turn 25 are twice as likely to get divorced.
In addition, Kate wanted kids more than Jon did. Kate wrote on sixgosselins.com, "I had wanted children right away, but Jon wasn't ready."
After they had the twins, she wrote, "The girls turned one and I started thinking about more children…after all, the girls had been pure fun and I wanted to do it again! But, Jon wasn't convinced. I prayed for a long time that God would change his mind. It took a long time and a rough experience for both of us for that to happen."
According to the study, women who want children much more than their husbands are also more likely to divorce.
Furthermore, Jon has lately been photographed smoking, which may also be another contributing factor.
The Australian researchers claim that couples where only one partner smokes are also more likely to end in failure.
One more obvious factor, not covered in the report, is the stress on a couple from having multiples.
Kate stated in the May 25 premiere of the show's fifth season, "Parents of multiples have triple the divorce rate. I was thinking we were going to beat that. I don't know if I can say that anymore."
