Glam Slam: Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Oprah just revealed she regained 40 pounds and now weighs 200 lbs. A never-ending battle with weight is something many people struggle with, especially during the holidays. How do you survive the temptation packed time of year without going overboard? Registered Dietician Keri Glassman, MS (founder of Keri Glassman, A Nutritious Life), who has worked with Eva Mendes, shares her tips for a healthy holiday.

1. EAT! EAT! EAT!
May sound like a contradiction, but Keri says don’t starve yourself! And never go to holiday parties or dinners hungry. “If you skip meals during the day, you will slow down your metabolism and most definitely result in over consumption,” Keri says. She suggests you eat three meals and two snacks a day.

2. BUT…
But be careful about WHAT you eat. At a party, survey the entire food selection and then go for the healthiest options, like lean proteins, whole grains and vegetables.

3. THAT GOES FOR DESSERT TOO
Keri suggests you aim for healthier options like fresh berries or a small sliver of apple or pumpkin pie without the whipped cream or ice cream.

4. WATCH THE ALCOHOL
Don’t let the calories in alcohol wreak havoc on your waistline. Alternate drinks with water or seltzer to control consumption and calories. Keri also advises to “choose lower calorie alcoholic beverages like vodka and seltzer or wine spritzers, instead of high calorie drinks like eggnog.”

5. WALK IT OFF!
Set walking goals. “Get off the subway one stop early and walk the remainder of the way. Take the stairs instead of the elevator,” Keri says.

And Keri makes one final good point that often gets lost in the holiday craziness. The biggest reason most people gather during the holidays is to see family and friends. “Focus on the company, NOT the food!”
