Crybaby Matinees Help Parents Catch Up

Better late than never: bring your kids to screenings of Oscar favorites this week.

Were you rooting for Kate Winslet's Best Actress win on Sunday because you loved her in The Holiday? C'mon, mamas and dads; you'd have gotten a lot more out of watching the Oscars than a renewed interest in working out if you'd been up on the nominated films.

We're right there with you, forgoing movie dates in lieu of the opportunity for rare extended conversations with our spouse and zonking out during Netflix attempts after long days of library-park ritual. Let's remember one friendly neighborhood arthouse theater's offer to bring our spritely youngsters to first-run films, played on low volume in dim lighting with a changing table just a few rows away.

Better late than not at all: The Reader, starring Kate Winslet, is on this week's Crybaby Matinee lineup at North Texas Angelika Theaters:

Angelika Dallas, 5321 East Mockingbird Lane, Suite 230, at Mockingbird Station. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1:30pm. This week: The Wrestler. Oscar nominations included Best Actor (Mickey Rourke) and Best Supporting Actress (Marisa Tomei).

Angelika Plano, 7205 Bishop Road in Plano at Shops at Legacy. Thursdays and Saturdays at 1:30pm. This week: Thursday, The Reader, nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Actress (Kate Winslet) and Best Picture; Saturday, The Class, nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
