NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth along with 29 sister NBC and Telemundo-owned stations, was honored with the "Love Amplified Award" at the Petco Foundation’s Annual Awards Gala held in San Diego, California on Friday, May 19.
The stations were recognized for their nationwide pet adoption efforts through their annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption initiative.
Nada Ruddock, Vice President of Community Affairs for NBC 5 joined Richard Kelley, President and General Manager of NBC 7 San Diego / KNSD, to accept the award on behalf of NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, a division of NBCUniversal that includes 30 television stations. "It's nice to see something that started as a 'great idea' in North Texas expand and have so much impact nationwide," said Ruddock. "Through Clear the Shelters we are not only able to match deserving animals with loving homes, but also raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption."

The Petco Foundation’s award recognized Clear the Shelters as a visionary marketing and outreach effort that has resulted in more than 70,000 pets finding new homes after the effort was launched nationally in 2015.

Clear the Shelters began in the Dallas-Fort Worth market in 2014 as a partnership between NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 and dozens of North Texas animal shelters. The 2014 effort resulted in the adoption of more than 2,200 homeless animals, the most adopted in one day in North Texas.
Last year, more than 50,000 pets found new homes after more than 50 local NBC and Telemundo television stations teamed up with over 700 animal shelters across the country and in Puerto Rico to offer a combination of traditional and waived adoption fees for this event.
The stations’ Clear the Shelters nationwide pet adoption campaign helps to raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption, and the overcrowding issues that local animal shelters typically experience in the summer months because of spring litters.
This year, Clear the Shelters will take place on August 19, 2017 with more than 60 North Texas animal shelters currently committed to the 2017 initiative.
