NBC 5 Helps Gear Students for College

60 students get free laptops

A group of graduating high school seniors are heading to college with laptops, thanks to NBC 5 and a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas.

Sixty students were honored at a Boys and Girls Club celebration Wednesday night at the Omni Hotel in Dallas.

Students were recognized for being Youths of the Year, as well as their hard work.

"It's an amazing feeling, actually knowing that a decision I'm making can shape the future of my family to come," said graduating senior David Vargas, who will be the first in his family to go to college.

Another graduating senior, Chadae Sauls, is also going to college. She said she is proud of the hardships she has overcome. She instantly found herself balancing school and acting as a second mother to her sisters when her father kicked them out.

"No matter what we go through in life, it doesn't say that, 'Oh, we're not going to be no one,' but it shows that we have to work even harder to get to the next level in our life where we can become someone and will become someone," Sauls said.

NBC 5 gave all 60 students a free laptop.

"I don't know; I am at a loss for words right now," Vargas said.

The NBCUniversal Foundation also gave five $20,000 grants to five area nonprofits that help the students and others like them.

"I'm really overwhelmed with everything that was given to me," Sauls said. "I wasn't expecting it."
