While Yu Waits, Lewis Impresses

While Yu Darvish’s status remains in serious limbo, Colby Lewis’ outlook improved dramatically.

Of course, he really had no way to go but up.

With Darvish in New York waiting for a second opinion on his injured right elbow, Lewis provided a glimmer of hope that the Rangers still have pitchers who can get batters out.

After throwing 35 pitches in an ugly inning in his spring training debut, the veteran limited the Angels to only one hit – a bad-hop single – in a crisp, three-inning outing Tuesday in Tempe, Arizona.

And he completed the three innings with only 11 more pitches than it took him to get out of one inning last week.

It’s still way early in the exhibition season, but with Darvish’s injury Lewis’ value has risen considerably. That makes his improvement that much more encouraging.

Last season against the Angels Lewis was battered for seven homers, a .378 batting average and a hideous 9.35 ERA. Even though Anaheim regulars such as Albert Pujols and Mike Trout weren’t in yesterday’s lineup, the Rangers’ rotation needs all the positive news it can get at this point.
