Tomko Brought Up, 4 Sent Down

The Texas Rangers have moved right-hander Brett Tomko to their major league camp and optioned four players to minor leagues.

The AL champions made their first significant moves of spring training Saturday, less than three weeks before the season opener.

Outfielder Engel Beltre, left-hander Zach Phillips and right-handers Fabio Castillo and Wilmer Font were optioned to the minor league camp.

Tomko, who hasn't pitched in the major leagues since Sept. 14, 2009, because of a nerve problem in his right arm, agreed to a minor league deal with the Rangers last month.

Tomko is a journeyman pitcher who has played for nearly every MLB team including the Athletics, Yankees, Padres, Royals, Giants, Cardinals, Reds, Dodgers and the Mariners.

With the moves, the Rangers have 52 players on the spring training roster. Tomko is among 16 non-roster players.
