Rangers Send Ohlendorf On His Way

Ross Ohlendorf was one of the key figures in the big bullpen shakeup by Jeff Banister following Neftali Feliz's final blown save of his Rangers career back in May.

Banister came out after that game against Cleveland on May 16 and said there were no more roles in the bullpen. Quickly thereafter, Shawn Tolleson locked down the closer's role, and early on in his tenure there were several nights when he was set up in the eighth inning by Ohlendorf, a veteran who was actually competing for a rotation spot in spring training before dealing with a groin issue.

After a handful of games in a high leverage bullpen role, Ohlendorf's groin issue came back into the picture and he was put on the disabled list.

On Monday, his 30-day rehab assignment came to an end, meaning he either had to be put back on the big-league roster or designated for assignment. After allowing 14 hits in 14 2/3 innings for Triple-A Round Rock, the Rangers opted for the latter.

Banister told the Dallas Morning News he hopes Ohlendorf will accept an outright assignment to the minors if he clears through waivers, which he likely will.

“We like Ross,” Banister said. “It’s unfortunate that Ross has been nicked up and injured for most part of the year.”
