Bobby Wilson gave a surprisingly good effort down the stretch in 2015 as part of the Rangers' scrap-heap tandem behind the plate that performed unexpectedly well.
Coupled with Chris Gimenez, Wilson helped fill a void left by Robinson Chirinos' injury and started 20 games over the final two months of the regular season. On Tuesday, the Rangers re-signed Wilson to a minor-league deal just weeks after signing Gimenez to a big-league contract.
That seems to point more and more toward the possibility the Rangers could be rolling with the same group of catchers in 2016 despite the fact none are anywhere close to star quality behind the plate.
Wilson will likely be the Rangers' first option for a call-up at Triple-A Round Rock as Chirinos and Gimenez seem to be the guys who will be on the big-league roster barring injury.
Gimenez has the upper hand on Wilson because of the fact he's a "personal catcher" to not only Cole Hamels but also to returning ace Yu Darvish, who missed all of 2015 after Tommy John surgery.
Wilson hit .221 in his 31 games with the Rangers, 25 of which were starts.
