Rangers on Verge of Saying Bye-Bye to the Boot

Good news: The Rangers won a baseball game Sunday.  Bad news: It probably won’t prevent them from relinquishing the cherished Silver Boot.

Nick Martinez pitched and Adrian Beltre hit and Texas beat Houston, 7-2, Sunday night. It wouldn’t be a day in the life of the 2014 Rangers without an injury, so just for fun, Alex Rios – who cleared waivers Friday and is eligible to be traded – re-injured his right ankle and is day-to-day.

But the real story over the weekend is the realization that for the first time since 2006 the Rangers will lose a season series to the lowly Astros. Yeah, it’s that bad.

Houston won the first two games of the series to clinch at least a tie for the Boot, one of the weirdest, most meaningless trophies in all of sports. Despite Sunday’s win the Rangers trail the season series, 8-4, with a four-game series in Houston looming at the end of this month.

Unless the Rangers sweep all four, the Silver Boot will move South down Interstate 45. It’s just another sign of what a weird, woeful season it is. From 2007-13 the Rangers went an astounding 46-18 against their in-state rivals, including 17-2 last season.
