Rangers' Interest In Lucroy Remains Valid

The Rangers apparently haven’t yet surrendered to the idea of upgrading catcher.

According to a report by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Rangers “remain interested” in acquiring Jonathan Lucroy from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Though the two sides haven’t had serious discussions recently, Rosenthal said the move continues to make sense for both teams.

With Robinson Chirinos as the starter, catcher remains Texas’ weakest position. He hit only .232 last season in 78 games. No doubt the right-handed hitting Lucroy would be an offensive upgrade.

He hit .301 with league-leading 53 doubles in his All-Star season in 2014 before slumping to only .264 last year because of assorted injuries.

If the Rangers are still sniffing around the catcher, what would they be willing to give up in order to acquire the 29-year-old?

He’s Milwaukee’s most valuable commodity, so the Brewers would be looking to add a top prospect or two. The Rangers used a couple of top prospects to get Cole Hamels last year, but maybe they offer Nomar Mazara or Lewis Brinson and throw in a younger shortstop?

Considering Lucroy’s upside, Chirinos’ and backup Chris Gimenez’ limitations, and the fact that the Rangers have struggled to have decent catching since Pudge Rodriguez left, a move - if cost effective - would be totally worth it.
