Rangers DFA Williams

The Texas Rangers needed a stop-gap when Nick Tepesch was dealing with a sore knee, and they gave veteran Jerome Williams a shot after he'd been cut loose by the Houston Astros.

Now, the Rangers have given him the same fate as they designated Williams for assignment on Friday afternoon, just hours before they met the team he pitched more than 20 relief outings for earlier this season.

In Williams' two appearances with the Rangers — both starts — he was 1-1 with a 9.90 ERA, and in an odd twist, it was the Oakland A's he shut down for the win and gave up 13 hits and 10 runs in four innings in a loss to the Cleveland Indians.

Williams has been a serviceable back-of-the-rotation starter for other teams in the past, but seems to be well past those days as he fell into a long relief role with the Astros before being designated for assignment earlier this year after 26 appearances and a 6.04 ERA.

To correspond with the move, the Rangers, as expected, activated Geovany Soto from the disabled list.
