Rangers Could Go into Season without Lefty in Bullpen

The Rangers have informed reliever Sam Freeman that he will be designated for assignment Sunday, leaving Texas without a left-hander in its bullpen for now.

Texas on Saturday optioned left-hander Alex Claudio and right-hander Jon Edwards to Triple-A Round Rock, and reassigned catcher Chris Gimenez and infielder Thomas Field to minor league camp.

Relievers Tanner Scheppers (sprained right ankle) and Kyuji Fujikawa (right groin) will start the season on the 15-day disabled list.

Freeman was acquired last week from St. Louis, and Texas is hopeful that he will make it through waivers.

General manager Jon Daniels said right-hander Anthony Bass traveled Saturday with the team to Oakland for its opener Monday, and would be on the roster if the Rangers are unable to add a left-handed reliever before then.
