The Rangers added another catcher to the mix on Monday, claiming Juan Centeno from the Houston Astros in a waiver claim.

Centeno spent some time as a backup catcher with the World Series champion Astros, hitting .231 with two home runs and four RBI in 22 games during three different stints on the major league club. He’s a career .235 hitter in 101 games with the Astros, Minnesota Twins and New York Mets.

Defensively, the scouting report on Centeno reads that he’s struggled to throw out runners during his brief major-league career and has graded out as a poor pitch-framer.

With that being said, the Rangers are thin at the catching position. Robinson Chirinos and Brett Nicholas are the only two catchers on the 40-man roster with big league experience. The Rangers did add one of their top overall prospects, Jose Trevino, to the 40-man roster last week.

Trevino hit .241 with seven home runs and 42 RBI last season with Double-A Frisco while receiving the 2016 Rawlings Gold Glove Award as one of the best catchers in the minors.
