Rangers Claim Carp off Waivers

Adding to the revolving door of first basemen the Texas Rangers have used since Prince Fielder went down with a neck injury that eventually required cervical fusion surgery, the Rangers claimed veteran first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

Carp was hitting just .198 for Boston this season in 42 games but did draw 11 walks to get his on-base percentage up to .320. Last season in 86 games, he hit a respectable .296 with a .362 on-base percentage, nine homers and 43 RBIs. His career-best year came back in 2011 in Seattle when he hit 12 homers and drove in 46 in just 79 games.

The Rangers hope the 28-year-old can find his swing again after a DL stint and possibly put himself in the team's plans for 2015 as a platoon-type player in the corner outfield spots and possibly at first base if Fielder's rehab doesn't go well.

So get excited, folks. This is what we've come to. Mike Carp.
