Profar Says 2014 Return Unlikely

Jurickson Profar dropped a bit of a bombshell on Tuesday when he said he doesn't expect to be able to return in 2014 from a torn muscle in his right shoulder.

If you remember, Profar was in the midst of rehabbing the shoulder, which didn't require surgery, a couple of weeks ago when he suffered a setback while hitting and was shut down with the thought it could end his season.

On Tuesday, Profar pretty much let the cat out of the bag when he said he doesn't think he can rehab in time to return by the end of the season, meaning the entire year will be a lost season for the 21-year-old former top prospect.

"You want to play, but at the same time you don't want to play hurt and make it worse," Profar told ESPN Dallas.

This is a bit jarring to hear from such a young player who didn't need surgery. You'd hope to have a little more drive from the guy who just two years ago was an untouchable prospect that could've netted just about anyone in the game with names like David Price and Giancarlo Stanton coming to mind.

Now? Profar probably couldn't get much of anything in return on the trade market.

You'd think Profar would be pushing to get back on the field, even if it might be unlikely. With the play of Rougned Odor, 20, and 21-year-old Luis Sardinas, Profar might find himself the odd man out, especially in the case of Odor, who has hits in seven of his last nine games and has that fearless approach you never saw from Profar.

This isn't meant to say Profar is just flat-out bad. He's still highly regarded in the game, but Odor might see to it that he never gets a chance to prove his worth, at least not with the Rangers. And Profar's declaration might cause some to question his desire just a little bit.
